5 reasons to watch ‘Dahil Mahal na Mahal Kita’

What if the person you love has a notoriously bad reputation? Would you still love them the same?

That’s the question campus geek and goody-two-shoes Miguel (Rico Yan) has to answer for himself when he falls for Mela (Claudine Barretto), a happy-go-lucky young woman known for being a “bad girl” in this 1998 romance-drama directed by Wenn V. Deramas.

Aside from finding out what would become of their relationship when Mela’s past proves to be a real issue for Miguel, here are five more reasons why “Dahil Mahal na Mahal Kita” is a definite must-watch:

1. Mela was not afraid to make the first move on Miguel!

We would dare call Mela a woman who’s ahead of her time! Nowadays, it’s generally more accepted for women to show interest first, but we can understand how Mela seemed to be the odd one out among her peers. Not only did she exude confidence in who she is, she was also relentless in letting everyone know whom she wants!

2. Miguel and Mela are total opposites which made their chemistry even more exciting!

If you’re not yet convinced that opposites do attract, just take one look at Mela and Miguel! After much resistance on Miguel’s part, he finally developed feelings for Mela who, unlike him, is more outspoken and plays by her own rules!

3. Mela stood up for herself even if it meant losing the one she loves!

We stan a queen who knows her worth and would not let anyone trample on it! When Miguel had to learn the hard way what it took to love his girlfriend, Mela showed that she would not stick around for someone who treats her badly.

4. Mela’s Tita Myrna gave her a lesson on self-love and self-respect!

The heart-to-heart conversation between Tita Myrna (Jaclyn Jose) and Mela deserves its own moment! Heartbroken and full of self-doubt, Mela received much-needed nuggets of wisdom from her Tita Myrna!

5. Miguel and Mela taught us the value of forgiveness and acceptance!

There’s no such thing as a perfect person, but we can always choose to love someone despite their flaws. Ultimately, that’s what this film taught us through all the relationship issues and personal struggles our beloved characters had to face!
