As part of showcasing Filipino cuisine and culture, a restored version of the 2002 Rory B. Quintos film “Kailangan Kita” was shown at this year’s World Food Festival in South Africa!
The event, which took place from May 30 to June 3, held a special screening of the romance-drama starring Claudine Barretto and Aga Muhlach which featured the best of Bicol’s culinary traditions and flavors.
On June 2, the same day as “Kailangan Kita’s” screening, the popular Filipino dish Adobo took center stage in a cooking demonstration during the International Cooking Experience. South African attendees experienced Filipino culture through taste, sight, and emotion combined. As a special treat, the audiences also got to taste Filipino snack food Oozies and Don Papa rum after the film screening.
For the five-day event, South African guests gathered in the Korean Culture Center in Pretoria, South Africa to enjoy the food and culture of various countries such as Brazil, Indonesia, Iran, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, and Sri Lanka.
Also in attendance was Philippine Ambassador to South Africa Noralyn Jubaira Baja who thanked the Korean Cultural Center for the opportunity to present Filipino culture at the festival.
“We thank the KCC for providing us the opportunity and platform to showcase Philippine culinary heritage and traditions. The Philippine Embassy in Pretoria acknowledges the vital importance of food and culture in further deepening the already existing positive people-to-people ties between Filipinos and South Africans,” she said as reported by the Philippine Embassy in South Africa.
