Eddie Gutierrez sheds tears in eulogy for former love team partner Susan Roces

Eddie Gutierrez broke down in tears while delivering his eulogy for his "certified on-screen ka-love team" Susan Roces who passed away on May 20.

The veteran actor recalled their greatest memories together as co-stars and love team partners at the wake of the Queen of Philippines Movies in Taguig City yesterday, May 24.

During his speech, Eddie looked back at their big screen projects together, including when they were first paired for a movie "accidentally" after Susan's supposed partner left the studio.

Since then, the two starred in a number of projects together, such as "Ang Maganda Kong Kapitbahay," "Susanang Daldal," and "Portrait of My Love," among others, making their mark in the industry.

“Sabi ng ibang fans, ‘Eddie, hindi mo ba naging girlfriend si Susan?'" the screen legend recalled at one point of his eulogy.

"Sabi ko, 'Hindi. Never kong niligawan si Susan.' Sabi ko, 'We were just partners.'''

"Alam naman ng lahat na si Susan, hindi lang maganda kundi pati puso niya maganda, so I will really miss her," he spoke of his leading lady.

Eddie also recounted a phone call he had with Susan on her 80th birthday last July 2021.

“Noong [last] birthday niya, tinawagan ko siya. Sabi ko, '80!'" Eddie recalled, to which Susan replied: “Oo nga, 80 na ako."

“Nag-usap kami almost an hour. Sabi niya, ‘Eddie, wala na 'yung mga kasama natin. Si Bobby [Romeo Vasquez], si Amalia [Fuentes], si Jose Mari [Gonzales], si Liberty [Ilagan], si Lito Legaspi. Tayo na lang dalawa,'” he narrated.

“Hanggang 'yun nga, birthday niya. Parang all of a sudden, naging malungkot siya. Tapos nagpaalam na kami, sabi niya sa akin, ’Take care.’"

“Sabi ko, 'Ikaw rin, take care. Mahal na mahal kita, Susan.'"

“'Ikaw din,' sabi niya, 'Mahal kita,'” Eddie added, breaking down into tears.

The actor then ended his speech by telling Susan: "I miss you and you'll always be a part of my life. See you in heaven."

Apart from Eddie, Boots Anson-Roa, Pilita Corrales, Nova Villa, and Maricel Soriano, also paid tribute to the screen legend at her wake.
