Ria Atayde couldn’t hold back her tears after hearing her mother, veteran actress Sylvia Sanchez, speak highly of her acting prowess, especially having been her co-star in the upcoming iWantTFC original series “Misis Piggy.”
During the show’s media conference yesterday, April 21, Sylvia praised Ria’s performance as her character’s eldest daughter in the upcoming series.
“Alam ko kaya ni Ria,” Sylvia affirmed. “Nakita ko naman ‘yung kapasidad ng anak ko. Hindi ko naman sasabihing magaling siya kung hindi siya magaling dahil ako ‘yung critic niya, eh. From day one pagpasok niya sa showbiz, nakita ko naman ‘yun.”
She continued, “Kampante ako na kaya ni Ria. Kahit first scene iyakan o mabigat, alam kong kampante ako. Basta ako inisip ko na, ‘Okay anak kita. Ikaw si Ria, pero dito ikaw si Lani.’”
Sylvia said she has always been a fan of her daughter’s acting, but this time, her admiration reached a deeper level: “Noon pa, hinahangaan ko si Ria bilang aktres, ‘yung kapasidad niya umarte. Pero mas hinangaan ko siya noong naka-eksena ko siya.”
When asked how she feels about her mother’s comments, Ria immediately shed happy tears, expressing how grateful she is for her mom’s words of affirmation.
“As kids, you only want to make your parents proud. My mom naman has always been vocal about stuff like that but I guess it’s really different when you’ve worked with her already,” Ria explained.
“I'm just really grateful. And it’s nice to hear that she’s proud of me and my acting,” she added.
According to Ria, working with Sylvia was “easier than she thought it would be.” For one, they didn’t have to create their on-screen mother-and-daughter dynamic from scratch.
Ria detailed, “I was really dreading it at the start na parang, ‘Oh my God, magkakatrabaho na kami ng mom ko.’ Pero when it happened, eto rin kasing si Direk Carlo eh, ‘yung mga unang eksenang binigay sa amin, ‘yung puro iyakan. Pero I feel like, in hindsight, it was the best decision that he made for me as an actress.”
“It made the whole experience easier. Madali rin na nanay ko siya. I didn’t have to think of, ‘Ah, kunwari nanay ko siya.’ kasi nanay ko talaga siya so mas madali in that sense,” she spoke of having her Sylvia as both her real-life mom and TV mom.
She also thanked Sylvia for maintaining a healthy professional relationship with her on set.
“This time, I was able to see na more than being my mom on the set, we’re able to have a professional relationship din. She really gave me my space and I really appreciate that. It really helped with what we were doing. As much as she is my mom, she treated me like an actress more than anything, and I appreciate that,” she said.
Written and directed by Carlo Enciso Catu, “Misis Piggy” revolves around the story of Marivic (Sylvia), a hardworking single mother whose three children are navigating their own journeys as adults. It also stars Iana Bernardez, Elijah Canlas, Ricky Davao, and Fino Herrera.
Direk Carlo spoke of how the show seeks to highlight the devotion of mothers: “Relevant talaga siya not only sa mga nanay na nasa Pilipinas, pero sa mga nanay na nagmamahal talaga sa pamilya. Especially sa mga nagtatrabaho sa abroad, mostly ang rason ay makapag-provide sa family.”
Jointly produced by Dreamscape Entertainment, iWantTFC, and Epicmedia, “Misis Piggy” is set to premiere on iWantTFC on April 25.
