Here’s what you can expect from ABS-CBN Films returning to theaters this year

Good news for cinema-goers! ABS-CBN Films' Star Cinema and Black Sheep productions are expected to return to the big screen this year as pandemic restrictions ease.

Thellie Palanisamy, distribution head of ABS-CBN Films, confirmed the possibility of screening new titles in cinemas, in accordance with Metro Manila having been placed under Alert Level 1 until March 31. Meanwhile, the rest of the Philippines is under Alert Level 2, which mandates indoor venues to operate only at 50% capacity, until the end of the month.

“We’re very excited, very positive about the whole thing. We’re happy to hear that we’re slowly going back to watching in the cinemas,” Thellie said.

She continued, “Our hope now is for the Alert Level 1 to be maintained, and hopefully nationwide na, so we can get the scope of the theatrical as we had it in the past.”

As COVID-19 cases decrease significantly, the possibility of cinemas operating at 100% capacity all over the country is now on the horizon.

Thellie affirmed, “We, at ABS-CBN Films, we’re definitely preparing for this. We’re committed to producing quality Filipino films for the world and we can’t wait to be in the cinemas again. ‘Yung success ng box office will heavily rely on the support of the audience, and we do hope that when the time comes, people will continue to watch movies in the theaters.”

Coming from a prolonged period of virtual premieres and movie-streaming, ABS-CBN Films is also looking to adapt “hybrid” releases along with exclusive theatrical runs.

“Some may have a hybrid release, which is a combination of theatrical and online. There will be titles that we are eyeing for exclusive release in cinemas,” she added.

As exciting as this all sounds, there is no definite timeline yet as to when these plans and preparations will materialize.

“Nakikita natin na papunta na tayo doon. Kaya lang, siyempre, nobody can say for sure. We’re hoping it won’t bounce back to another surge. Mahirap magsabi ng timeline, because it depends on a lot of factors,” she explained.
