Cherie Gil marks 'rebirth' by shaving her head

Cherie Gil surprised her fans with a brand new look after she shaved her head as seen in the cover of the lifestyle magazine MEGA.

For their anniversary issue, the veteran actress opened up in the exclusive feature about her plans of leaving showbiz, moving to New York, and what pushed her to do it.

Admittedly scared of this new chapter of her life right now, Cherie said she has already found the "tools" to deal with it -- by not focusing on her fears.

“I just had to make sure that first and foremost, my mental, emotional, spiritual states were getting the priority," said Cherie. "I was getting tired of myself. And I was just so angry and unhappy, so I sold everything and packed up."

“I got rid of all the clothes I had that symbolized a past life… I’m completely finding myself and coming to terms with who I really am. It’s just great to have this opportunity and to be alive to start over. It’s like a rebirth of sorts," she added.

And what's the best way to mark a rebirth? It would be cutting her hair -- shaving it all for her part -- a physical transformation that the actress believes symbolizes her growth.

“I won’t deny that I have gone to therapy and counseling. Years and years of doing that, I learned that it just boils down to doing the hard work on and with yourself by whatever means. What’s hair 'di ba? It grows back. It’s symbolic to my personal growth. When a woman is in distress, she cuts her hair,” she said.

This drastic change in her life would also mean sacrificing the career she has long built for decades.

But for Cherie, it doesn't matter now that she gets to spend more time with her children. And who knows, with her freedom right now, she might even go into an acting school in the near future.

"May mga nagsasabi kasi marami akong pera but in fact, they don’t know anything. I’m just a human being. We go through the same ropes of the downs, the highs and the lows. I am not going to be surprised if I die a pauper, but I have lived a life."
