Maricel Soriano is set to be part of the upcoming romantic-comedy film in the US titled “Re-Live: A Tale of an American Island Cheerleader.”
Variety reported the news over the weekend, where she will star alongside Filipino-American actresses Rain Valdez and Rachel Leyco.
The Diamond Star will portray Thelma, the mother of Rowena (Rain) and Rochelle (Rachel), according to the report.
Rain also said in the Variety report how much it means to cast a "legendary actress" like Maricel in the Hollywood project.
“Having a legendary Filipino actress like Maricel Soriano strengthens our commitment to telling our stories from our authentic experiences and for our Filipinx diaspora,” she said.
Following the news, Rain also gushed about the thought of working alongside the Diamond Star in an Instagram post on Sunday, January 23.
"She was always our first choice and my mom and I would watch all her movies growing up. I remember saying to my team very early on, “We need somebody like… Maricel Soriano.” And a year later, here we are! I am completely beside myself with excitement and happy tears," she wrote in the caption.
“Re-Live” follows the story of Rowena (Rain), described by Variety as “a transgender movie star who returns to her home in Guam for her high school reunion."
During her visit, she gets the chance to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a cheerleader. Things, however, aren't easy after the cancer of her mother Thelma (Maricel) starts to worsen.
The rom-com will begin filming in November in Hawaii and Guam, according to Variety. It will be co-written by Rain and Rachel, with the former also marking the film as her feature directorial debut.
