WATCH: Jose Mari Chan tearfully recalls unforgettable ‘Christmas in Our Hearts’ memory

Jose Mari Chan tearfully recalled a performance of “Christmas in Our Hearts” that happened in Lanao del Norte.

In an interview with Mario Dumaual for “TV Patrol”, the Filipino Christmas icon expressed his gratitude over the love the classic song continues to receive 31 years since it was first released and how it’s able to resonate with all kinds of people regardless of their beliefs.

The singer shared, “You know what they requested for? ‘Christmas in Our Hearts’. And majority of the people in the audience were Muslims, I didn’t know what to say. Even though it wasn’t not yet Christmas, I wanna bring the spirit of Christmas into this gym, so I sang ‘Christmas in Our Hearts’.”

“And you know what?” he continued. “‘Pag dating nung parte ni Liza (Chan), the whole gym was singing along, ‘Let’s sing Merry Christmas…’ They were singing about, ‘This season, may we never forget the love we have for Jesus.’”

He explained this is what gets him emotional about this particular event. “The song was able to cross boarders, even the Muslims were singing along to that song. Telling that story brings tears to my eyes. It was such a very touching moment in my career. So thank God for the gift of song, for the gift of music.”

As memes with his face are once again being spread around social media to kick off the “ber months”, Jose Mari reminded everyone what this season should be about.

“Christmas is fast approaching and Christmas means family,” he said before adding, “[It’s] very important to be healthy. So I urge each and everyone of you to get vaccinated. Protect yourself, protect your family, and protect others. Please, have yourselves vaccinated.”

Another thing the 76-year-old wishes people to do is smile. “Your smile is your best attire, so keep smiling. Kasi kung lagi kang masungit, you look old,” he quipped.
