Alexa Ilacad on juggling career and studies: 'I wanted to prove myself that I wasn’t just an artista'

A 1.0 general weighted average and becoming a Dean's Lister certainly did not come easy for Alexa Ilacad.

But with her perseverance, she made it possible all while juggling her career as an actress. This is why it's no surprise that people are comparing her to her "Four Sisters Before the Wedding" character Bobbie Salazar, who is also an achiever in the movie.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Alexa was said she got high grades not because she is academically smart, but because she is determined with her studies.

“Honestly, hindi naman ako talaga matalino sobra. But what I am, is masipag," she humbly said.

"So I think that’s what people need. We need that tiyaga, we need that extra effort to achieve what we want… What I really am is just masipag. I just work extra hard. These things didn’t come easy for me,” she added.

Her achievements, however, are just a cherry on top of what Alexa has gone through. The "Init Sa Magdamag" actress revealed breaking down many times in the past because of all the pressure from studies and work.

“I cried and cried, but then I realized, I still have to do it. So, let’s do it. Pahinga lang muna. Tanggapin muna ‘yung cards that I have been dealt with, and then let’s do it!” she said.

Unlike her character Bobbie in the movie who strove for her family, Alexa said she is more ambitious to prove other people who doubted her wrong.

“I was pushing myself, doing everything. I was very ambitious. I wanted to prove myself, that I wasn’t just an artista. People were belittling me. I wanted to prove them wrong,” she said.

While it helped her to do better academically, Alexa said it took a toll on her mental health to the point that she lashed out on other people because of the stress.

Alexa then advised to the people who are in the same situation to never sacrifice your well-being in the process of working towards achieving something.

"To anyone doing anything at all, always prioritize your well-being. If doing all of that means sacrificing your mental health, do not. It is not going to be worth it in the long run. You’re still going to feel empty inside, because you would be broken and tired."

“At the end of the day, you have to take care of yourself the most. All the other things around you will follow. Make sure you are fully okay. Kasi we can’t do anything naman unless we’re 100%. That’s one thing we forget when we’re so wrapped up in things we want to achieve. We forget to take care of ourselves,” she enthused.
