Nesthy Petecio wins silver in boxing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Nesthy Petecio took home the Olympic silver medal in boxing after losing to Japan's Irie Sena in the final of the women's featherweight division on Tuesday, August 3.

With a unanimous decision of 5-0, Irie denied Nesthy of the gold in the games. This is the fourth time the two faced each other in the ring since 2019, with three of the matches won by Irie.

Despite failing to nab the gold, Nesthy still made history as she won the country's first Olympic medal in boxing in 25 years. Onyok Velasco last won a silver medal in the 1996 Atlanta Games. Nesthy's silver finish also makes her the first Filipina Olympic medalist in boxing.

Two more Filipino boxers are also set to compete for medals in their respective divisions this Thursday, August 5.

Congratulations, Nesthy!

Nesthy's silver medal is the latest historic win by a Filipina following the Olympic gold of Hidilyn Diaz at the weightlifting competition of the games.
