"Kun Maupay Man It Panahon" starring Daniel Padilla, Rans Rifol, and Charo Santos-Concio has officially premiered at the 74th Locarno Film Festival, and it was described no less than "extraordinary" in the first review from the ongoing event.
In a review by Berlin-based film critic and programmer Giovanni Marchini-Camia at the Locarno website, he wrote, "Religion and myths contend to offer salvation. The attitude of the characters is perplexing, ambiguously pitched between cynicism and resilience, offering a provocative portrait of a population for whom calamity is a recurring and inevitable fact of life."
"With keen empathy, dashes of dark, yet compassionate humor, and occasional flights into fantasy: why is a lion sitting on a roof, calmly spectating the mass suffering? Manatad takes us on an extraordinary journey across a Boschian panorama of dire need and fortitude."
"Kun Maupay Man It Panahon" ("Whether the Weather is Fine") was the sole Filipino film selected to compete in the Concorso Cineasti del Presente section of the festival.
Set against the backdrop of Typhoon Yolanda, it tells the story of Norma (Charo) and her son Miguel (Daniel) as they struggle for survival and deal with the absurdity of fate, sustained by the hope that they carry, and what is lost and gained.
Andrea's (Rans) character “becomes Miguel's guiding light as they traverse and prepare to flee the wreck they once called home.”
After the film's festival run, the movie will have a North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) under the Contemporary World Cinema programme in September.
The film is a joint production of iWant, Quantum Films, Black Sheep, Dreamscape Entertainment, Globe Studios, together with Cinematografica, Plan C, House on Fire (France), AAND (Singapore), and KawanKawan (Indonesia).
