A woman just made history!
Hidilyn Diaz just become the first-ever Olympic gold medalist from the Philippines after ruling the Tokyo 2020 Olympics weightlifting competition at the Tokyo International Forum on Monday, July 26.
Not only that, she also just became the first Filipina to have two Olympic medals, as she also won a silver medal from the 2016 Rio Olympics.
In an interview with Gretchen Ho for Cignal TV, Hidilyn expressed how her victory came as a surprise to her.
“Hindi ako makapaniwala na naiuwi ko ito. Nasurpresa ako na nagawa ko ‘yun. Kakaiba si God,” she said.
The athlete also took the time to thank those who have supported her, especially during the times she felt like giving up.
“Thank you so much for believing in me. When the times na gusto ko na sumuko dahil sa dami ng pagsubok na pinagdaanan, nakaya nating mga Pilipino,” shared Hidilyn.
She is expected to take home a whopping P33 million, as tycoons Manny Pangilinan and Ramon Ang pledged P10 million each, while Deputy Speaker of the House Mikee Romero committed P3 million to add to the P10 million worth of incentives from the Philippine Sports Commission.
Congratulations and thank you for giving us all pride and honor, Hidilyn!
