The couple then shared their engagement story on Yam's vlog, as they recalled the day Miguel popped the question to the actress.
According to Miguel, he first asked for the blessing of Yam's mother and brother before he proceeded with the planned trip. Initially, they wanted to go to Iceland since it is the actress' dream destination.
However, timing became an issue and they don't want to spend the holidays in the freezing cold.
Miguel recalled, "You (Yam) first said Iceland, so we were thinking Iceland. But timing became an issue, and because of the timing, we didn’t want to go to Iceland in the middle of winter when everything was frozen."
Luckily, Yam suggested Japan as their second option, and it's actually where Miguel envisioned the event happening.
He added, "[I said], ‘Okay, well where would you want to go?’ You said, ‘Maybe Japan?’ And that’s when the stars aligned because my plan the whole time was to ideally have my wish granted by the gods and to fold a thousand paper cranes."
Upon arriving in Niseko, Yam said she noticed that Miguel wouldn't let go of his backpack wherever they went. "'Yun pala, he made sure that [the ring] was with him the entire trip,” she realized.
As they finally got closer to midnight of December 31st, the plan was again compromised after they were left by the shuttle that was supposed to bring them to the viewing deck.
However, a woman suddenly parked outside their hotel and they asked her for a favor.
“She did not really speak English, but I think she just understood the words ‘help’ and ‘proposal.’ We got in the car. We drove down to Hilton. When we got there, it’s 11:49 PM. You got out of the car first and the driver was like, ‘Happy New Year,’” Miguel shared.
Yam, who was still clueless at that time, was handed over a book about thousand paper cranes by Miguel. Little did she know, it was to make her realize that it has to do something about his proposal.
“You were flipping through that book as we were walking down the path and you were like, ‘What is this book? Why are you explaining what a thousand paper cranes means? Why are there photos of everybody that I know holding cranes, folding cranes?’ That’s when we saw a light up ahead so I said, ‘Why don’t we just walk over to the light,’” he said.
“And you got to the last page of the book. You were doing your 180 looking at the cranes. While your back was turned, I got down on one knee and I said, ‘My dad said that sometimes it’s the right person that chooses you, and that’s how I’ve always felt about us.’"
"And then I asked you to marry me. And you say, ‘Are you serious? Yes, of course!'" he recalled.
As to why they kept their engagement a secret for more than two years, Yam said she was in "career mode" when it happened.
“Miguel proposed to me in 2018, and at that time, I was still taping for ‘Halik’ and my management said that they had projects lined up for me and stuff. So I was just really, you know, in career mode," she shared.
Grateful for her partner's understanding, she said, "He made it easy for me. He didn’t pressure me to get married right away and honestly, he really witnessed my career journey. He knows how much I love my job and how much I really waited and worked so hard to land great projects. So, yeah, he really just gave me the freedom to decide on when I think we should go public about it and just to make it all happen for real."
Now, Yam wants to prioritize her relationship which is why she finally announced their engagement.
"At this point in my life, I realized to prioritize our relationship and, you know, he waited two years, and has only been very supportive and understanding of my work, my career, my individual growth. Up to this day, he still is and I feel like that will never change," she said.
"Finally no more LDR (long distance relationship) and grabe, six years of LDR is no joke and we’ve gone through so much and I’m so happy that we are finally here. We made it through and we are engaged!" she gushed.
