The countdown has begun for the premiere of Netflix’s Filipino supernatural animated series “Trese”, starring the voices of Shay Mitchell and Liza Soberano.
In a behind-the-scenes look shared by Netflix, Shay, who plays the lead in the English version, introduced the series being “based on a graphic novel that is set in modern-day Manila that uses Filipino folklore to tells its stories.”
For its Tagalog version, Liza takes the main role of Alexandra Trese. She described her as a “bad*ss female detective who is the protector of peace and harmony between the living and the supernatural beings who coexist in the Philippines.”
Shay expressed how excited she is to tell the story that she has grown to love so much, which Liza relates to as she was “blown away” when she first read the script, especially by its Filipino version.
“It’s beautifully told when it’s in Filipino and it has more of a sentimental value to me and more of a connection to me,” said the Kapamilya star.
Liza also explained how she sees herself in Alexandra, “We’re both very courageous when it comes to people that we love. She has this responsibility and duty towards the people of Manila, and she really takes that to heart.”
As for the former “Pretty Little Liars” actress, she thinks, “We’re both very determined women and I think whenever she puts her mind to something, she gets it done.”
The two women are thrilled to finally let the rest of the world discover Philippine folklore in such an engaging way.
Shay told fans to watch out for surprises along the way as well, “Definitely gonna have a lot of twists and turns, so don’t think you know what’s coming, because you don’t.”
Based on the award-winning work of writer Budjette Tan and artist Kajo Baldisimo, “Trese” will be released on Netflix this June 11.
