Not long ago, Sharon Cuneta teased a “big surprise” to her fans. She had already prepared for it, but circumstances happened and what she had to share became a sad news instead.
On May 28, the award-winning actress went live on Instagram to share she has been feeling down, because a really big opportunity slipped away from her.
“My big surprise was that I was coming to Hollywood to do my first Hollywood film. Not for any platform, not for Netflix, but for cinematic release, with premieres all over,” said Sharon.
She added that this film is backed by A-list producers, including world-renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg and starred by an all-Filipino cast.
“The very first all-Filipino cast [in a Hollywood film] that I was so honored to be chosen to be a part of. Ang lead star po nito ay si Jo Koy,” she said.
Sharon explained that Jo Koy, the Filipino-American stand-up comic who gained worldwide fame for his Netflix shows, was actually the one who suggested her to be in the film. “Jo Koy was the one who handpicked me to be in his movie. He suggested to the producers, pinag-usapan nila, and then I had several Zoom meetings already with the casting director, the director, and later on with Jo.”
The reason that she’s not able to do the project was that when she got tested for COVID-19, she received a “false positive” result, which was confirmed when she took more COVID tests and all turned out negative.
Time also ran out as the filming has to be finished by end of June and Jo Koy would have to go on tour.
The film is loosely based on the comedian’s life and Sharon was going to play his aunt, Tita Teresa. The role went to Tia Carrere, who appeared in the cult classic “Wayne’s World” and voiced Nani in “Lilo & Stitch”.
