Candy Pangilinan shares lessons learned from failed marriage

Candy Pangilinan is a Philippine comedy staple. But behind all the funny acts we see on TV, we knew little about the pain she has been carrying for a long while.

In an interview with Toni Gonzaga, Candy opened up about a rough time with her marriage with her former husband, with whom she had a 10-year relationship.

According to Candy, she already caught some of her ex-husband's illicit affairs even before they tied the knot, but she decided to stick with him hoping that he will change.

"Pero kasi ‘di ba, 'yung babae, feeling mo people change. Feeling ko a baby will save it kaya nag-decide ako mabuntis. So nabuntis ako, but no," she said.

Candy was 31, she recalled, when she was pregnant with her son Quentin. And even while carrying a baby inside her womb, Candy's ex-husband repeatedly told her he would leave.

“Sinasabi niya sa akin na iiwanan niya ako. Sinasabi naman niya sa akin. At least, nag-aabiso. In-inform ako," she jokingly said, adding that working for ABS-CBN's "Whattamen" show was the only thing that kept her sane that time.

After she gave birth to Quentin, Candy's ex made true to his promise and left. She said her former husband told them that he would be playing golf but he never returned.

"Nagpaalam naman siya sa akin. Sinabi niya maggo-golf siya. Tapos hindi ko na alam kung anong butas ang tinira niya. Hindi na siya umuwi. Baka nakalaban niya si Tiger Woods. Hindi ako na-inform," she said in jest.

At that point of her life, Candy thought she needed the help of a psychologist as her former husband kept telling her that she's crazy for thinking he was having illicit affairs. Candy also sought spiritual help to get her through that tough time.

In the end, Candy said she's still thankful for what happened and especially for her son Quentin, who became her life's biggest blessing.

"Everything was a blessing. 'Yung hiwalayan, parang hinanda ako ni Lord. Binago niya 'yung pagkatao ko, 'yung mindset ko, 'yung perception ko about things para handa ako for Quintin," she said of her son who has special needs.

"Kasi dati feeling ko asawa ko 'yung diyos ko. Yung buhay ko sa kanya umiikot. Wala akong ginawa, para akong detective. Wala akong ginawa kundi magduda or magmatyag. I’ve realized na hindi ito 'yun. Kapag napapagod ka pala tapos in-offer mo lahat kay Lord, parang everything unfolds and becomes a miracle. Gumagaan. So nung dumating si Quintin at ito 'yung nilagay sa harap mo, may rason si Lord dito. Alam ko meron," she added.
