It would be a dream to see Liza Soberano representing the Philippines in Miss Universe. But it seems like it will always be just that — a dream.
Her name was on everyone’s lips yet again after this year’s pageant, but not for the best reason. Someone on Facebook impersonated the actress and promised the public that she will join Miss Universe in 2022 after Rabiya Mateo failed to take home the crown.
Liza—the real Liza—responded to the post as quickly as it went viral, bursting many’s hopes.
On “Kapamilya Chat” last Wednesday, May 19, she addressed the pageant push and reiterated that she doesn’t see herself sashaying into it.
“I’m very flattered, nakakakilig na gusto ng mga tao na sumali ako sa Miss Universe,” said Liza. “But, like I’ve always said noon pa, I really don’t think it’s for me.”
You’d think being one of the biggest stars in the country for quite some time would make one comfortable in the spotlight, but the “Alone/Together” star revealed that she still gets anxious every time she has to step on the stage.
“I get anxiety when I’m on stage. ‘ASAP’ pa nga lang, sasayaw lang naman ako, hindi naman magsasalita, grabe na ‘yung kaba ko. What more if it was for Miss Universe? I don’t think that I would give justice to everybody’s expectations. I think I would pass out on stage,” she shared.
In 2017, Liza had a taste of what it’s like to train as a beauty queen when she portrayed Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach on an episode of “Maalaala Mo Kaya”.
“Na-experience ko kahit paano ‘yung training for Miss U,” she recalled. “Grabe, ang taas ng heels na sinusuot nila! Ako, hindi ako sanay sa sobrang mataas ng heels, kasi may height na rin ako. Sanay ako sa mababa. When I tried the high heels, I was tripping all the time. Malamang, 'pag sumali ako sa Miss U, madadapa din ako sa stage, even though may training.”
In the same interview, where she was joined by reel and real-life partner Enrique Gil, Liza also expressed her thoughts over Rabiya not even making it to the Top 10 of the competition.
She admitted, “When we found out she wasn’t going to be part of the top 10, we all felt really hurt for her. It wasn’t fair! Of course, bias natin ang Philippines. Everything she has been going through, all the training, hindi talaga siya biro.”
But she added that regardless of how everything turned out, she is still proud of the beauty queen and lauded her performance.
“Win or lose, she’s still a winner for all of us Filipinos. I believe she represented us very well. She made us all proud. She did so amazing on stage,” said Liza.
