Catriona Gray responds to netizen who accused her of not supporting Rabiya Mateo’s bid for Miss U

Catriona Gray is definitely keeping up with this year’s Miss Universe pageant and as she got a good look at the contestants’ arrival looks, she couldn’t help but remember the outfit she wore during her time.

After congratulating the organization for being able to stage this global event despite the pandemic, as well as the beauty queens and the teams helping them, she wrote, “Seeing all the arrival looks so I'm reminiscing my own arrival look in Thailand 🙏 (Definitely one of my favorites!) Who are you all cheering for?”

While some gladly commented their personal bets for the competition, others took it as a chance to question Catriona why she didn’t give Miss Philippines Rabiya Mateo a special shoutout instead.

“REALLY? You’re a Filipina, but instead of cheering for Rabiya Mateo, you ask people who they are cheering for?” one netizen wrote.

To which the Miss Universe 2018 responded by saying, “I’m a Filipina AND a Miss Universe. It’s a celebration of women from all over the world.”

Another netizen left a comment to tell Catriona, “You can at least show your support to Rabiya even just through insta story. We know Pia has shown her support!”

And she replied, “I’ve reached out to Rabiya throughout her journey privately. Not everything is on display on social media.”

In an interview with ABS-CBN News last May 5, Rabiya shared that Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach has offered her some advice for the pageant.

“She told me, don't open your social media. Focus and protect your inner peace,” said Rabiya.

She also borrowed the earrings Pia used in the competition and brought it with her to Florida where the event is being held for good luck.

“Wala namang masama, I asked her kung ano pwede niyang ipahiram. So ‘yun ang agimat na dala-dala ko,” she revealed.

The Miss Universe 2021 pageant is happening on May 16 (May 17 in Manila). You can catch it on the Kapamilya Channel and A2Z at 8:00am.
