Rabiya Mateo believes education is the key to success in life.
That's why the Philippine representative in the Miss Universe pageant is bringing her advocacy for education to the grandest stage of all.
"I really had my humble beginnings, and education transformed my life. Now, I am a teacher. I hope that my students will see the value of education the way that I saw it," Rabiya said in a video uploaded by Miss Universe on Youtube.
Rabiya said in a country like the Philippines, education is a great "equalizer" that provides opportunity for people who may not have a lot in life.
"Education is our social equalizer. Regardless of what background you have, what status of your family is, if you educate yourself, you will be able to land a great job," she said.
Having had humble beginnings herself, Rabiya promises to do her best to champion the ordinary people if she wins the Miss Universe crown.
"[What] we need nowadays is not just a beauty queen with a pretty face. We need phenomenal women who are not afraid to speak and to stand for the things they believe," she said to conclude the video.
Rabiya is now in Florida, USA for the Miss Universe Pageant happening on May 16 (May 17 in Manila). You can watch it on the Kapamilya Channel and A2Z at 8:00am.
