Chinese drama taken down from streaming platform over offensive Filipino line

Streaming platform iQIYI has taken down the drama “Make My Heart Smile” from their library after receiving backlash over a controversial scene where a derogatory line was said about Filipinos.

The 24-episode series played out a montage where the lead female character happily tried on dresses for the approval of a male character. Dismayed by the outfits she chose, he gave her comments like “You look like an aunt” and then later, “You look like a Filipino maid.”

Clips and screenshots of the said dialogue posted by outraged viewers circulated online and many called out the show for being offensive and racist.

iQIYI Philippines released a statement via Twitter to apologize and acknowledged the scene as “offending.”

“It has come to our attention that there is an offending scene in the show ‘Make my Heart Smile.’ This is not OK and we have edited the scene out. We are sorry,” they said.

In an earlier statement given to ABS-CBN News last Tuesday, February 9, iQIYI declared that the series has been pulled from their platform.

They also said that they are “aware of the growing reactions to a scene on the show…that puts Filipina overseas workers in a negative light.”

“It is not our intention to offend and upset our Filipino subscribers and we are sorry. The show has been removed from the platform and we are continuously working towards making sure that incidents like this do not happen again.”
