IN LOVING MEMORY: Famous personalities who died in the past 5 years

This November, we’d like to take the time to remember the celebrities and influential personalities who passed away and left their indelible mark in show business. Without them, the entertainment industry has never been and will never be the same. Nonetheless, we believe that the brilliance they’ve shown throughout their lifetimes is more than enough for their legacies to live on.

Listed below are the late actors, actresses, comedians, directors, and famous personalities who have departed this life in the past five years.

2016

German Moreno

Also known as "The Master Showman", German “Kuya Germs” Moreno died on January 8, 2016 after suffering a stroke which led to cardiac arrest.

Wenn V. Deramas

Renowned for his works “Ang Tanging Ina,” “The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin,” and “Beauty and the Bestie” to name a few, director Wenn V. Deramas succumbed to respiratory failure and heart attack on February 29, 2016.

Lilia Cuntapay

There is only one “Queen of Philippine Horror Movies” and that’s no other than the late Lilia Cuntapay. At 81 years old, Lilia was laid to rest in her son's home in Pinili, Ilocos Norte.

Joy Viado

Comedian-actress Joy Viado brought so much joy to Filipino audiences through her numerous film and television stints. After suffering from diabetes for about thirty years, she passed away following a heart attack on September 10, 2016.

Miriam Defensor-Santiago

At 71 years old, Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago passed away in her sleep on September 29, 2016 after battling with lung cancer. The year prior to her death, she filed her candidacy for the President of the Philippines for the third time.

Dick Israel

Veteran actor Ricardo Vizcarra Michaca, who went by the stage name Dick Israel, passed away at 68 years old on October 11, 2016 after he started vomiting blood.

Blakdyak

Dubbed as the "The King of Pinoy Reggae,” actor-comedian Blakdyak was found dead in his condo in Sampaloc, Manila on November 21, 2016. To this day, the cause of his death has not been confirmed.

2017

Franco Hernandez

An unfortunate drowning incident took the life of Hashtags member Franco Hernandez on November 11, 2017. Up to his death, he was in a relationship with model Janica Nam Floresca.

 

 

Isabel Granada

During a meet-and-greet with her fans in Doha, Qatar, actress Isabel Granada fell into a coma on October 25, 2017. Two days later, she was pronounced brain dead after suffering from a brain hemorrhage and aneurysm.

 

 

Alfie Lorenzo

Talent manager and showbiz columnist Alfie Lorenzo died on August 1, 2017 due to a heart attack. He managed Judy Ann Santos, Karla Estrada, and Gretchen Barretto, among others.

Pepsi Herrera

Known for his refined gowns that have become staples to celebrity events like the Star Magic Ball, fashion designer and stylist Pepsi Herrera passed away due to a heart attack on February 10, 2017.

On June 8, 2019, Eddie Garcia tripped on a cable wire and hit his head on the pavement on set while shooting for a television series. The accidental fall caused him to suffer from a neck and cervical fracture. He drew his last breath on June 20, 2019.

Comedian and radio personality Carmelito Reyes, who went by Shalala in showbiz, died on June 23, 2021, because of pulmonary tuberculosis. 

Zeny Zabala

Emerenciana Ortiz Santos, popularly known as Zeny Zabala, passed away at 80 years old on August 8, 2017. She was best known for her kontrabida roles in Philippine cinema. 

2018

Spanky Manikan

Spanky Manikan’s acting legacy in television, film, and theater will forever remain in showbiz. He died on January 14, 2018 after battling with lung cancer.

Maryo J. Delos Reyes

Known for his works “The Unmarried Wife,” “I'll Be There,” and “A Love Story” among others, director Maryo J. Delos Reyes suffered a heart attack on January 27, 2018.

Bernardo Bernardo

In 2018, stage actor and comedian Bernardo Bernardo was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. After his death on March 8, 2018, many actors and directors paid tribute to him and his legacy in the Philippine entertainment industry.

Rico J. Puno

The death of Rico J. Puno on October 30, 2018 left a big gap in Philippine soul music. He passed away at age 65 due to heart failure.

Rolly Quizon

Dino Quizon

The Quizon family also mourned the death of Dino Quizon in 2018. The cause of his death was not revealed.

Mico Palanca

Mico Palanca’s death at 41 years old broke the hearts of Filipino audiences worldwide. The exact cause of his death has not been confirmed.

Pepe Smith

King of Pinoy Rock Pepe Smith passed away due to cardiac arrest on January 28, 2019.

Bentong

At 55 years old, Bentong bid this world goodbye after suffering from a cardiac arrest on February 9, 2019.

Chokoleit

Eddie Garcia

On June 8, 2019, Eddie Garcia tripped on a cable wire and hit his head on the pavement on set while shooting for a television series. The accidental fall caused him to suffer from a neck and cervical fracture. He drew his last breath on June 20, 2019.

Tony Mabesa

Stage actor Tony Mabesa, who is considered one of the founding fathers of Philippine university theater, died on October 4, 2019. The cause of his death has not been revealed.

2020

Domingo “Menggie” Cobarrubias

With a career spanning approximately 200 films and TV shows, Menggie Cobarrubias’ death broke the hearts of many. He died on March 26, 2020, from complications of pneumonia.

Lloyd Cafe Cadena

Gone too soon, prominent YouTube vlogger Lloyd Cafe Cadena suffered a cardiac arrest and died at 26 years old on September 4, 2020.

 

 

April Boy Regino

Dennis Regino Magloyuan Magdaraog, known by his stage name April Boy Regino died at 51 years old on November 29, 2020, following a long battle with prostate cancer.

Ramon Revilla Sr. 

Dubbed as the "Hari ng Agimat" in Philippine cinema, Ramon Revilla Sr. died on June 26, 2020 due to heart failure.

Anita Linda

On June 10, veteran actress Anita Linda drew her last breath at age 95 in her home in Parañaque City, Metro Manila.

Madam Auring

Madam Auring, who rose to prominence for her captivating fortune-telling skills, died on October 30, 2020, at the age of 80. The cause of her death has not been revealed.

2021

Claire Dela Fuente

Dubbed as “Asia’s sweetest voice,” Claire dela Fuente died March 30, 2021 nearly a week after she tested positive for COVID-19.

 

 

Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III

At 61 years old, former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III died of renal failure secondary to diabetes. The Aquino family confirmed that the late President died in his sleep on June 24, 2021.

Ricky Lo

Many celebrities mourned the death of veteran TV personality and showbiz editor Ricky Lo. He passed away on May 4, 2021 due to a stroke.

Mahal

At age 46, comedian Noemi Tesorero, popularly known as Mahal, died on August 31, 2021 due digestive complications after testing positive for COVID-19.

Shalala

Comedian and radio personality Carmelito Reyes, who went by Shalala in showbiz, died on June 23, 2021, because of pulmonary tuberculosis.
