Jake Cuenca charged with ‘reckless imprudence’ following arrest over traffic incident

Jake Cuenca was arrested by authorities after his Jeep Wrangler allegedly bumped a police patrol vehicle on Saturday evening, October 9, in Mandaluyong City.

According to Eastern Police District (EPD) director Police Brigadier General Matthew Bacay as reported by DZBB Super Radyo, the police were in the middle of a buy-bust operation in Barangay Barangka Ibaba, Mandaluyong when Jake’s SUV bumped one of their police cars at around 9 p.m.

The “Viral” actor immediately drove off after the alleged traffic incident which led to a police chase from Mandaluyong City to Pasig.

Authorities were forced to fire a bullet at the SUV’s tire along Shaw Boulevard. Instead of hitting the tire, the stray bullet hit a Grab delivery rider.

"In the course of the chase nila, 'yung mga personnel natin had to disable 'yung sasakyan, pinaputukan 'yung gulong. May tinamaan na Grab driver," EPD director Bacay said.

The driver was brought to Rizal Medical Center and is now in stable condition.

The police were able to identify the actor once they approached the SUV. Jake was consequently brought to the Mandaluyong Police Station where he was charged with cases of disobedience and reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property.

EPD director Bacay detailed that upon inspection, no illegal substances or materials were found in Jake’s car.

According to Jake’s father, who went to the Mandaluyong Police station early Sunday, October 10, the actor sped off in a state of panic and did not intend to engage the police in a cop chase.

Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), condemned Jake's actions, calling them "reckless and irresponsible" as the cop chase placed motorists and bystanders at risk.

“Being an actor and a public figure, he must set a good example for people who idolize him by owning up to his mistake and facing its consequences,” said the PNP chief.

According to Gen. Eleazar, all PNP personnel will be placed under restrictive custody and investigation regarding the fired bullets.

Meanwhile, actor Paulo Avelino stood up for Jake’s actions in a Twitter post, stating that he would’ve done the same thing: “If someone was shooting me it’s either I shoot back or run for my life.”
