'Yellow Rose' director explains the story behind the movie title

If you're one of those who are intrigued to see "Yellow Rose," then you're in the right place.

During the film's press conference yesterday, January 21, Filipino-American director Diane Paragas talked about how she came up with the title, which plays a huge role in the movie.

"'Yellow Rose' is a very famous Texas song. It's a song that was written a long time ago. Any Texan knows it. But in the case of this movie, since it's such a famous song, people tease Rose (Eva Noblezada) and call her Yellow Rose. It's a derogatory term, meaning Asian, Chinese," she explained.

However, Direk Diane said that there's another underlying meaning to it.

"The other story behind that, the actual 'Yellow Rose' song, which was a very popular song I guess in the '20s or '30s, was actually about a Mulatto girl. The yellow term there was actually her mixed race," she added.

In the movie, Rose (Eva) dreams of being a country music performer. But how necessary is country music actually for the musical drama?

"[Country music is important because] that's all she had. A lot of us had similar things. Something that we cling to when we feel like we're hanging from a thread. For Rose it was country music," Eva explained.

"The poetry of that, the reminder that you are not alone, that you have people behind you and in front of you, you will always be protected. And that the world is beautiful if you choose to look at it like that. That's a huge driving factor for my character Rose and the film," she added.

Now, "Yellow Rose" is finally coming to the Philippines and the whole team couldn't be more excited.

Direk Diane said, "I've been waiting for this day for a long time. As much as it is an American film, it is definitely a Filipino film. I'm just really excited for people to see it there. It's been many, many years trying to get this thing made so this is a big moment for me. It feels like coming home."

One of the stars Princess Punzalan also feels proud that the movie will finally be seen by Filipinos.

"Proud na proud ako na mapapanood na finally ng ating mga kababayan ang pelikulang ito dahil napansin siya dito sa Amerika at sa iba't-ibang film festivals internationally. And gusto ko rin makita ng ating mga kababayan itong pelikula na ginawa namin so excited na rin ako mapanood nila, ng mga pamilya ko rin d'yan," she said.

Agreeing with the two, Eva said, "It's so nice to make the rounds and finally go through the finish line of showing everybody. It's seen by everybody else, it's struck the hearts of people from all over the world and now it's finally coming back to the root of it all."
