It was 25 years ago when “Sana Maulit Muli” starring Lea Salonga and Aga Muhlach captivated the hearts of Filipinos!
One of the most iconic Pinoy love stories of all time, the film chronicles the ups and downs of lovers Jerry and Agnes, whose relationship turns sour when Agnes is forced to migrate to America.
To this day, we still get shivers when rewatching “Sana Maulit Muli”, deeply moved by Lea and Aga’s unforgettable performances and the film’s realistic portrayal of a romance in peril. But more than two decades have passed, and we’re still wondering—are they ever going to do a reunion movie?
Lea dished on the possibility of reuniting with her co-star. In a recent interview with G3 San Diego, she said that if they were to do a reunion movie, it should be far more compelling than “Sana Maulit Muli”.
“It needs to be something that eclipses ‘Sana Maulit Muli’ and that’s a very high bar that we set,” she said. “That’s all our fault. We raised the expectations so damn high that where do you go from here?”
Clearly, there’s still thirst for a Lea-Aga movie, and for that matter, a Lea-Aga romance! Even now, fans still wonder why they never got together back then. Lea thinks “it was always just a matter of timing.”
“I think we just really enjoyed working together. There’s mutual respect because we’ve worked together previously,” she said. “So doing this movie, it’s like picking up from where we left off. It was a lot of fun. He’s pretty easy to work with.”
“Sana Maulit Muli” came out in 1995, and was directed by Olivia M. Lamasan. It won six Gawad Urian awards, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay.
