Donny Pangilinan speaks out against the Anti-Terrorism Bill: ‘The imminent threat is not us, it's the virus’

Donny Pangilinan is the latest Kapamilya celebrity to have joined the campaign to junk the controversial Anti-Terrorism Bill.

The actor took to Twitter today, June 4, to share his own thoughts about the Bill. He did extensive research and personally read the Bill himself to form an opinion. He now supports the #JunkTerrorBillNow campaign.

“Our country is bleeding. It's a tough time for the world as well. It's overwhelming — waking up each day wondering what's going to happen next. And to add everything, we still have a virus that continues to spread,” he began.

Donny then emphasized his belief that the fight against the coronavirus should be the priority right now.

“Is this not what the focus should be? Flattening the curve and saving lives, not passing a bill that would (clearly) cause more chaos, fear, and could potentially falsely label people as ‘terrorists’ under their definition. Yes, it does specify in section 4 very serious actions that may consider one a terrorist, but we have seen abuse of power countless times before, and words being played around with just to fit a certain story,” he pressed.

“And again, is this really the priority? Why now? The imminent threat is not us, it's the virus. I may not be in politics, but I am simply speaking from the heart, as a citizen,” he added.

The "He's Into Her" actor believes that silencing the voices of Filipinos wouldn't help at a time when everyone needs to be united.

“We need to be united more than ever, and be able to freely express how we feel, especially in times like this. Now is not the time to be divided, nor the time to silence the voices that choose to speak out on how they truly feel about the way situations are being handled,” he enthused.

Apart from Donny, Kapamilya stars Kathryn Bernardo, Liza Soberano, Nadine Lustre, Pia Wurtzbach, Anne Curtis, Angel Locsin, Iza Calzado, and Khalil Ramos have also used their voices to help the campaign against the Anti-Terrorism Bill. Yesterday, June 3, it was approved by the House of Representatives on its third and final reading.
