Award-winning filmmaker Peque Gallaga has passed away. He was 76.
The legendary director's manager June Rufino confirmed the news today, May 7, according to a tweet by ABS-CBN News’ MJ Felipe.
“JUST IN: Award winning Director Peque Gallaga just passed away, according to his manager June Rufino, who shared this sad news to their closest friends. He was 76,” he tweeted.
The Gallaga family also released a statement through Peque’s friend Jo Macasa. They said there will be no service to observe safety precautions amid the coronavirus pandemic.
"The Gallaga family announces with great sadness the passing of Peque Gallaga this month of May, 2020. He was a visionary director and artist; a loving husband, father, and grandfather; and a dear friend. He has brought so much joy to so many people and he will always live in our memories and in his art," the statement read.
The family also expressed their gratitude to those who extended their thoughts, well-wishes, and prayers.
Last May 5, "Magic Temple" co-director Lore Reyes shared a statement from Peque's family regarding his condition on Facebook.
“The family of Peque Gallaga would like to make this statement in regard to the news and rumors circulating about him. Peque Gallaga is in the hospital due to complications arising from past health conditions,” they wrote.
“They appreciate everyone’s message of love and concern but they would be grateful if this remains a private affair."
Peque was known for his masterpieces such as 1982's "Oro, Plata, Mata," 1996's "Magic Temple,” and 1997’s “Magic Kingdom.”
