Maris Racal is no stranger to being a target of trolls.
In an exclusive interview with the actress today, May 27, she spoke out about becoming a subject of hate and bashing online after she aired out her personal opinions on political issues that the country experienced last April.
“Nagkaroon ako ng isang buwan na hindi nag-internet not because I'm affected or hurt, but because ayaw ko lang talaga silang mag-comment,'” she said.
According to Maris, she learned a lot from the experience. She shared, "Na-realize ko na may mga tao talaga na hindi makaka-accept sa opinions ng iba and that's okay. Parang in-expect ko naman na may backlash towards that tweet kasi siyempre that moment na-dishearten lang talaga ako sa mga nangyayari and I think I'm free to express that. Ni-let go ko na lang 'yung situation, hinayaan ko na lang 'yung time na mag-ayos nito."
“Thankfully I did that, kasi the more na nag-engage ka sa problem na ‘yun, the more na mas lalaki ‘yung issue. Gladly, I'm okay now,” she added.
But as with all things, the bad came with the good. There is always a silver lining, and for Maris, it was doing good and giving back through a philanthropic project.
Maris had launched a fundraising drive with the nonprofit organization Agbay Tagum, which successfully raised over P600 thousand to provide personal protective equipment for health workers in her hometown of Tagum City, Davao.
It's been more than a month since the project wrapped but she admitted that she still feels overwhelmed by the support she received for the campaign.
“Noong time na 'yun, genuine talaga 'yung concern ko na 'Ano'ng mangyayari doon [sa Tagum]?' Like, everybody here and all of my friends were doing donation drives for this city (Manila) lang. So why not gawa rin ako for my hometown kasi gusto ko rin sila tulungan with the platform that I have, with the voice that I have,” she revealed.
“Ginawa ko 'yun agad agad siguro two weeks into the ECQ pa lang noon. Thankfully after two weeks, we were able to raise 600k. Hindi ko in-expect na ang dami pala willing tumulong like 'yung mga fans ko ang dami sa kanila nag-donate, and people from Tagum. Ang daming generous talaga, ‘yung generous amount like wow, people are willing to help,” she continued.
Maris wouldn’t think twice to use her platform for Tagum again. She said, "'Wag naman sana ma-extend or tumagal 'yung nangyayari sa atin ngayon, pero if ever na magka-problem doon, I'm willing to help again."
Maris appeared in the 2020 Mikhail Red thriller, "Block Z." It is now available for streaming on iWant
