“Death of Nintendo” will finally make its debut at the 70th Berlinale!
The coming-of-age film, which is a collaboration project between Filipino-American writer and producer Valerie Castillo-Martinez and acclaimed filmmaker Raya Martin, will debut under the Generation Kplus category at the prestigious film festival this month. It showcases films that appeal to the lives and worlds of children and teenagers.
A joint production between IndieFlip and ABS-CBN Films, Black Sheep, “Death of Nintendo” tells the story of four teenagers who are obsessed with video games. It is set in the ‘90s prior to the catastrophic Pinatubo eruption, and will tackle the challenges they have to face as adolescents.
According to Valerie, she chose the particular ‘90s setting because it’s a time that she remembers vividly from her teenage years.
“I chose the year of the eruption of Mount Pinatubo because I remember the morning I woke up to seeing the ashfall—it’s a vivid image seared into my memory, and so visually that inspired the events around the story,” she shared.
“Aside from peppering pieces of myself in each of the kids, the juxtaposition of video gaming with playing in nature is also what I think defines my generation. The nation itself was having an identity crisis as it was dealing with catastrophic events while the American military forces were departing the country,” she added.
“Val and I had the exact same Catholic suburban-bred world being schoolmates. I also remember it was the beginning of the Internet aside from the console wars, so we were really fascinated between this virtual new world and touching ground that I felt was unmistakable in her story,” Direk Raya added.
“Death of Nintendo” stars Noel Comia, Jr., Kim Chloie Oquendo, Jiggerfelip Sementilla, John Vincent Servilla, Moi Bien, Nikki Valdez, Angelina Kanapi, Jude Matthew Servilla, Elijah Alejo, Cayden Williams, and Agot Isidro.
It will have a series of screenings in Berlinale from February 22 to February 26. Philippine launch is yet to be announced.
