Tony Labrusca has this certain appeal that makes us feel all sorts of things whenever we see him on-screen. But did you know he almost never entered showbiz?
The entertainment industry would not have seen a shadow of Tony, if not for a decision that changed the course of his life.
During the virtual media conference of Tony’s upcoming film “U-Turn”, yesterday, October 7, he revealed what he would consider to be the biggest "u-turn" of his life.
“Siguro ‘yung biggest u-turn ko is ‘yung pagbabalik ko dito sa Pilipinas,” Tony answered.
The 25-year-old actor is originally from Canada. He grew up there with his mom Angel Jones, who is a singer. When he was old enough to work, he took different jobs but he felt like his earnings just weren't enough.
“Kasi nung 20 ako, hindi ko na alam kung anong gagawin ko sa buhay ko. Kasi nagtatrabaho lang ako, minimum wage," he said, and added that he was also pursuing a career in haircutting. "Nag-aaral [din] ako ng [pagba]barbero. Ayoko lang kasi na naiisip ko ‘yung future ko na paycheck to paycheck.”
Tony decided to take the risk and go home to the Philippines. He related, “Sabi ko hindi ko alam kung anong meron para sa akin sa Pilipinas. Wala naman akong pera. Pero pumunta pa rin ako, kasi this is my home, kahit ‘di ko alam kung anong meron para sa akin dito. [Pero] it worked out for the best.”
When he was finally here, he began auditioning for modeling and commercial gigs. Then, he joined the television talent competition show “Pinoy Boyband Superstar” where he finished as part of the top 7. After that, acting opportunities opened up for him. He had a breakout performance as a younger man who was crazy in love with an older woman (Angel Aquino) in the iWant original film “Glorious” in 2018. His latest outing was in the ABS-CBN Films’ Black Sheep boys love (BL) series “Hello, Stranger” alongside JC Alcantara.
Recently, he was cast in the new Kapamilya serye "Bagong Umaga" together with Heaven Peralejo, Kiko Estrada, Barbie Imperial, Michelle Vito, and Yves Flores.
Life really did change for Tony since he made that “u-turn." But this charming actor still dreams of opening his own barber shop in the future. “Isa ‘yan sa bucket list ko,” he said.
