Environmentalist and philanthropist Regina "Gina" Lopez has passed away early today, August 19.
ABS-CBN made the statement, expressing its profound mourning over the death of the pillar of the network's public service arm, ABS-CBN Foundation, which she founded in 1989.
"The whole ABS-CBN family profoundly mourns the passing of Regina Paz ‘Gina’ Lopez, chairman of ABS-CBN Foundation."
"We lost a fervent advocate of children’s rights and protection, a passionate proponent of sustainable livelihood among the underprivileged, and an unswerving champion for environment preservation."
During her time as a chairperson for the organization, she advocated the protection of the environment and the welfare of children.
It was also during Gina's time when ABS-CBN Foundation produced several educational programs which became a hit among children, including "Sineswela" and "Math-Tinik."
In 2016, she was appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte to head the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, which she served until 2017.
Following that, she hosted and co-produced the weekly environmental show "G Diaries" until late last month, during the finale of its third season.
Her passing marks a great loss, not only to ABS-CBN, but to the entire nation as well. Her legacy will remain in the hearts of every person who she has touched, forever.
