Push for Eddie Garcia to become a National Artist continues

Eddie Garcia left quite the legacy in the showbiz industry, and as such, the government is now being urged to recognize the late actor with the National Artist award.

Calls to have him recognized grew following film director Benedict Mique made an emotional appeal after accepting the actor's Best Actor Award during the 42nd Gawad Urian on June 18, two days before his death.

Veteran actors and actresses also raised the need to bestow Manoy with the recognition, to honor his contribution to the country's entertainment industry.

In an interview, action star Lito Lapid, who worked with Eddie in different projects, expressed his support for the proposal.

“Dapat siguro. Wala pang nakakakuha sa record niyang ganyang edad na 90 tapos nakakapag-action pa siya, 'yun nga, wala pa siyang sakit,” he said.

Vilma Santos-Recto is also in favor of the move.

“Siyempre alam naman ng lahat that Tito Eddie is an institution. Nararapat lamang na ibigay sa kanya 'yung para sa kanya kasi, kung meron man tayong dapat hangaan, up to his last breath ay siya iyon na nasa show business,” she explained.

Meanwhile, Cherie Gil pointed out that the award should have been given to him a long time ago.

"Long overdue. Tito Eddie has given so much of himself to all of us. Para sa akin, National Artist na siya," she said.

Christopher de Leon said that Manoy could have appreciated it if he was recognized while he was still alive, saying, “Ba't di niyo binigay nung buhay pa siya? ‘Di ba? He could have appreciated that when he was still alive, and now he’s up there...beyond. All the credentials are here.”

The Order of National Artist is the highest national recognition given to Filipino individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts. The award, which is jointly administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, is conferred by means of a Presidential Proclamation.

With a career spanning over seven decades, starring in over 600 movie and television roles, and receiving countless awards, it seems essential for Eddie to be recognized as National Artist, and a lot are hoping to see his name on the list the next time they confer the award.
