#FamilyIsForever: A look back on ABS-CBN’s most iconic Christmas station IDs

We’ve finally seen the much-awaited 2019 ABS-CBN Christmas Station ID entitled “Family is Forever” which gave us a chance to look back at the network’s colorful and heartwarming history.

It gave us all the major throwback vibe — The mashup! The memories! The excellence! — and it is only proper to answer that with a deep dive into ABS-CBN’s past station IDs, some of which are so iconic, we still have the songs memorized.

“Isang Pamilya, Isang Puso Ngayong Pasko” (2002)

ABS-CBN’s Christmas Station ID from 2002 is considered as, ahem, The Pioneer. It was not the network’s first foray into memorable Station IDs since it has been producing such campaigns since the 1990s, but it was the first to feature scenes we now expect to see during the yuletide season: an appearance of the country’s biggest stars, including icons in the industry, Vilma Santos, Nora Aunor, Fernando Poe Jr., and Dolphy, all matched with a jingle.

It would serve as the standard of Station IDs that the network has worked hard to consistently hit ever since.

“Sabay Tayo Kapamilya” (2004)

This station ID was the first Robert Labayen made for ABS-CBN after becoming the head of the network’s Creative Communications Management Division (CCM). The campaign opened with a scene depicting the joy of reunions among OFW families, leading to a commemoration of Filipino talent. It was a presentation of dances, choir performances, and the best of the best OPM had to offer.

The ID was also the first to feature an ensemble-sung jingle and the first to gather all of the network’s celebrities and personalities in a single venue.

“Bro, Ikaw ang Star ng Pasko” (2009)

“Star ng Pasko” is probably the most popular Kapamilya Christmas Station I.D. The country was reeling from the wrath of Typhoon Ondoy and Pepeng, and ABS-CBN decided to present a sentimental song performed by top Kapamilya artists, paying homage to the resiliency of Filipinos, proving that light and hope can and will shine amid the darkness they had experienced.

Fun fact: the CCM Team already had a different concept in the works even before the typhoons hit the country, but needed to conceptualize a new one following the tragedy.

Another fun fact: The CCM produced an extended version of this station ID which featured more celebrities and news personalities.

“Ngayong Pasko Magniningning ang Pilipino” (2010)

Pinoy pride was the main theme behind the 2010 ABS-CBN Christmas station ID. From our traditions, practices, and other values, this campaign featured every Pinoy trait that all Filipino should be proud of. The ID was also accompanied by a song led by Gary Valenciano, Toni Gonzaga, and the University of Santo Tomas singers.

“Da Best ang Pasko ng Pilipino” (2011)

The Philippines is known to have one of the longest celebrations of Christmas in the world, and that is what makes the Yuletide season a unique one for our people. ABS-CBN’s campaign in 2011 presented the distinct Pinoy uniqueness of the season. Also featured in the ID were the ways OFWs celebrate Christmas by staying connected with their loved ones, in spite of being far away from their homeland.

The station ID was also the first to be performed by a Maria Aragon, accompanied by the University of the Philippines Concert Chorus.

“Lumiliwanag and Mundo sa Kwento ng Pasko” (2012)

The 2012 Christmas Station I.D. was in line with ABS-CBN’s 60th anniversary the following year, which was themed “Kwento Natin ‘To.” It aimed at giving joy and hope among Filipinos amid the events that devastated the nation.

Stories of hope among ordinary people, which were all inspired by real events of heroism were presented alongside the appearance of hundreds of the Kapamilya network’s biggest stars.

“Magkasama Tayo sa Kwento ng Pasko” (2013)

To cap the celebration of its 60th year, ABS-CBN paid tribute to Filipinos with inspiring stories. That year, the network also decided to drop its use of reenactments — ordinary people joined the biggest stars in singing and promoting the meaning of the campaign.

Days after its initial release, the country was hit by Super Typhoon Yolanda. In a call to unite for victims of the devastating tragedy, ABS-CBN released a more mellow version of the Christmas song. That version became the anthem of the network’s “Tulong Na, Tabang Na, Tayo Na” campaign.

“Thank You, Ang Babait Ninyo” (2014)

ABS-CBN’s station IDs are sometimes likened to a continuous story. That year, it promoted the spirit of gratitude and gave tribute to inspiring individuals. “Thank You, Ang Babait Ninyo,” often sung by Christmas carolers, was performed by “The Voice Kids” finalists Lyca Gairanod, Darren Espanto, Juan Karlos Labajo, and Darlene Vibares.

“Thank You For The Love” (2015)

The 2015 ABS-CBN Christmas Station ID was the first time that the Kapamilya network brought together three of its biggest loveteams, KathNiel (Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla), LizQuen (Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil), and JaDine (James Reid and Nadine Lustre) to perform its catchy single with Bamboo and Ella Nympha.

“Isang Pamilya Tayo Ngayong Pasko” (2016)

The message of the 2016 Christmas station ID was simple: that we will always be together as a family in battling through life’s tough challenges. Celebrities also gave away tokens for inspiring individuals and groups who have assisted others in spite of all the hardships that they have also experienced.

Taking the lead for that year were “The Voice Kids” coaches Bamboo, Lea Salonga, Sarah Geronimo, and Sharon Cuneta, together with their mentees Joshua Oliveros, Lyca Gairanod, Elha Nympha, and Antonette Tismo.

“Just Love Ngayong Christmas” (2017)

Snippets and stories of inspiring acts of love were the main highlight of the Kapamilya network’s Christmas anthem for 2017. Stars were also tapped to provide assistance to the people of Marawi City and military men assigned in the area who were affected and recovering from the effects of the siege earlier that year.

It also emphasized the resiliency of Filipinos, a people who can surpass any challenge that they face.

“Family is Love” (2018)

From the title itself, the 2018 ABS-CBN Christmas Station ID focused on the importance of family and love. Different stories that depict the true meaning of family were presented, including a family of military men and a foreigner doctor serving a far-flung community in Rizal.

“Family is Love” also showed the biggest gathering of Kapamilya stars in a single venue, with nearly 400 celebrities joining forces to sing another iconic and sentimental Christmas anthem.
