The 1996 film "Mara Clara: The Movie," headlined by Judy Ann Santos and Gladys Reyes, marks its 22nd anniversary, today, September 18.
It is the very first Star Cinema movie adapted from a TV series, which aired from 1992 to 1997.
Judy Ann scored two recognitions (FAMAS Best New Movie Actress and the German Moreno Youth Achievement Award) for her stellar performance as the underprivileged but good-natured Mara. The hit series also made her known as the Queen of Pinoy Soap Opera of her generation.
Gladys, meanwhile, was considered the Primera Kontrabida after she nailed her role as the well-off but despicable Clara.
Directed by Emil Cruz Jr. and Jerry Lopez Sineneng, the film also starred Juan Rodrigo, Beverly Vergel, William Martinez, Susan Africa, Dan Fernandez, Wowie De Guzman, Christopher Roxas, and more.
Judy Ann and Gladys were reunited as best friends in the comedy film "Ang Dalawang Mrs Reyes" earlier this year.
The two prime actresses remained close friends even after their "Mara Clara" days.
