We live in a movies and series-centric era of entertainment, but it’s always a nice feeling to return to our favorite books, reread all our favorite lines, and just be consumed with all the FEELS they bring.
And there’s no better time to revisit your love for reading than today, August 9, because it’s Book Lovers Day! If you’re still unsure what to read though, you’re in luck because we asked a few celebrities for their personal book recommendations.
Here’s what they said:
1. Arci Munoz
The “Since I Found You” actress isn’t a fan of traditional books, and instead sticks to fairytales and comic books.
“Manga, comics, ‘yun ‘yung mga books ko, tsaka ‘yung mga Edgar Allan Poe na short stories, [pero puro halos] Hans Christian Andersen ‘yung makikita mo sa kwarto ko ‘tsaka mga Marvel. Gusto ko ‘yung mga mystery, mga unresolved mysteries and cases,” she said.
Arci last starred in the 2017 romance “Can We Still Be Friends?”
2. Bea Alonzo
The Movie Queen is a big fan of inspirational and slice of life novels, which started after she read “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom.
Bea added, “I became a fan of Paulo Coelho after I read ‘The Alchemist,’ then my favorite book of all time is “Eleven Minutes” (also by Paulo), so ‘yun talaga ang recommendation ko.”
The actress starred in the romantic drama “Kasal” this year. She also has an upcoming movie with Aga Muhlach, as well as the horror film “Eerie” with Charo Santos.
3. Darren Espanto
The young singer-actor is a huge fan of fantasy, young adult series, and has finished “Harry Potter,” “The Hunger Games,” and “Divergent” series.
Darren also believes in reading books first before the movie adaptations, citing “Murder on the Orient Express” as an example.
“Kapag sa movie kasi, may mga ilang details na nale-left out, may charaters na tinatanggal ‘pag nasa movie na… kaya read the book muna,” he said.
Darren is part of the upcoming movie “The Hows of Us” with Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla.
4. Empoy Marquez
He may be a funny man on-screen, but Empoy is deeply in touch with his spirituality - he recommended the Holy Bible!
“Mas gusto ko kasi ‘yung spiritual books, ‘yung Bible. Every morning kasi ‘pag gumigising ako, ‘yun agad ang binabasa ko. May pattern ako everyday. Masarap kasing basahin eh,” he explained, although he also indulges in fiction books from time to time.
“Mahilig ako sa books, pero mas ma-comics din ako and Marvel,” he said.
Empoy most recently starred in “Kusina Kings” with Zanjoe Marudo.
5. Joseph Marco
The actor is also fan of inspirational books, and recommended the deeply metaphorical “The Shack” by William P. Young.
Joseph starred in “Dear Other Self” last year.
6. Moira dela Torre
The “Tagpuan” crooner had a lot of recommendations up her sleeve, starting with the “Crazy Rich Asians” trilogy by Kevin Kwan.
“Sobrang funny, sobrang light, and ang dami ring lessons,” she said.
Moira added the “Chronicles of Narnia” by C.S. Lewis to her list, saying how hopeful it always makes her feel.
“Light read lang sila tapos it brings you back to your childhood,” she said.
Lastly, Moira recommended two self-help books by the Eldredge couple, “Captivating” and “Wild at Heart.”
She explained, “It just talks about insecurities and how its okay because your flaws make you captivating anyway.”
Moira sang “Kahit Maputi na ang Buhok Ko,” the official theme song of “The Hows of Us.”
7. Piolo Pascual
Because of his super busy schedule, Papa P rarely has the time to read, but he makes sure to regularly read the Holy Bible.
“I only read the Bible, I read Christian books… and the scripts that are sent to me,” he finished with a laugh.
Piolo stars in the primetime romance series “Since I Found You.” He also starred in the dark romance film “Last Night” in 2017.
