Gilas Pilipinas star Marc Pingris has issued a public apology after facing backlash for posting an Instagram selfie of his team after their controversial brawl with the Australia Boomers at the 2018 FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers last July 2.
"While I honestly meant no disrespect to anyone, I realized that the timing was inappropriate," the basketball player wrote on Instagram yesterday, June 5.
"This unfortunate incident has taught me a valuable life lesson, particularly on the need to be circumspect in such situations. Will do my best to conduct myself better especially in support of the Gilas Pilipinas National Team. Sorry talaga tao lang talaga ako, nagkakamali. Patawad po sa lahat," he continued.

The same night, a regret-filled Marc spoke to members of the press and called the photo a product of "bad timing".
"For me naman, bad timing lang pero wala talagang ibig sabihin sa akin 'yun. Bad timing lang talaga, habang naghihintay lang kami noon nag-selfie kami. So tingin ng mga tao sobrang bastos, talagang embarrassing. Well, nandoon na tayo humihingi ako ng sorry. But for me talaga wala akong ibig sabihin. [Hindi ko ginustong] bastusin man 'yung kalaban natin, 'yung mga bisita natin," he told ABS-CBN Sports.

Basketball federations from both Australia and the Philippines have issued apologies for the Monday night "basketbrawl". However, FIBA is still expected to slap players with tough penalties when it concludes its ongoing investigation of the incident.
