Vice Ganda applauds PBA player for speaking up about LGBTQ+ and homophobia

Phenomenal Star Vice Ganda for the "first time," encountered a "straight male" Filipino athlete who was not afraid to voice his opinion regarding the LGBTQ+ community and homophobia in sports -- and that is PBA player Arnold Van Opstal.

4 of the most memorable LGBT characters in PH cinema!

Yesterday, July 14, Arnold, who played for the De La Salle Univesity Green Archers before joining the PBA, posted on his Instagram Stories (@arnoldvanopstal) an answer to the inquiry, "Are you part of the LGBTQ+?"

Arnold said, "My brother is 'gay,' a lot of my good friends are 'gay'. However, I am 'straight.'"

He then continued to share his thoughts regarding sexuality, saying, "The whole game of labeling sexuality is a joke. Preferences are preferences, love is love, and everyone deserves to be their own authentic selves without having to fear the judgment of others."

Being an athlete himself, he also talked about homophobia in his profession. He said, "I feel like athletes are not doing enough to address the homophobia that is very apparent in sports due to fear of judgment set by their peers and coaches. Equality comes from all aspects, not just race and I'm happy to stand up for equality."

A few hours after Arnold posted, Vice re-shared the his message, adding how he hopes everyone can learn from Arnold.

"First time I encountered a Filipino athlete boldly spoke about LGBTQ+ and homophobia. Thanks Arnold Van Opstal (@arnoldvanopstal)!!! I hope everyone including your fellows in your sport see this post," said the "It's Showtime" host.

Vice then added the hashtags "#StopJudgment #StopHyprocricy."

Meanwhile, Vice will star in the movie "Fantastica: The Princesses, the Prince, and the Perya" an official entry Metro Manila Film Festival 2018 to be shown in cinemas this December.
