BoybandPH member Russell Reyes called for people to value the ability of an artist to deliver a message rather than the range of their voice on Twitter last night, June 3.

It all began when he agreed with a tweet praising American singer-songwriter Khalid for representing basses and baritones in the music industry.

“Omg truth. Toooooo many male artists out there trying to hit them high notes. Stay in your lane and stay true to your own voice fam,” Russell tweeted.

Though a high tenor himself, the 19-year-old admitted that he found the lack of attention towards “artists with lower, gorgeous voices” unfair.

He advised that artists have songs done in lower keys than force themselves to sing notes they just can’t reach.

“My golden rule is - don't record it in the studio if you can't do it live. If it's too high, LOWER THE KEY (given you're allowed to),” he continued. “There is NO shame in singing lower. It doesn't mean you're a bad singer at all - as a matter of fact, it means you actually care about performance.”

“It's not about the notes you can sing/reach, but your ability to properly deliver the message of a piece - that is what differentiates a casual singer and a true musician,” he ended.

Russell’s “rant” caught the attention of acclaimed performer Lea Salonga, who expressed her thanks in all-caps to his tweet about his “golden rule.”

The Tony awardee then took to her own Twitter account today, June 4, and gave out her own advice to singers everywhere.

“Dear singers, please sing in your own voice's sweet spot,” she wrote. “It might take some time to figure that out, but here's a hint: it's where sonic heaven and the limits of physical comfort meet, enabling you to create art.”

“And we've not yet included emotional connection to this equation, but that's a whole other kettle of fish,” she added.

Russell currently stars in “Wansapanataym Presents: Ofishially Yours” alongside the other BoybandPH members Joao Constancia, Ford Valencia, Tristan Ramirez, and Niel Murillo. Lea is currently in New York for the Broadway revival of “Once On This Island.”
