Direk Cathy Garcia-Molina has never been known to mince her words - she always tells things as they are, even if they could offend other people, including the lead stars of her movies.
The fact applies to Gerald Anderson as well, whose ego the master director “stepped on” while filming for “My Perfect You.”
“From the very start sabi ko, ‘Ge, alam mo naman na hindi ako napopogian sa’yo…’ At hindi ko siya gustong umarte,” she said during the film’s Media Launch last March 10. “Tinapak-tapakan ko ‘yung ego ng taong ‘to, wala ng preno ‘yung bibig ko, all for one intention: I want to bring out who Gerald really is, or maybe what else Gerald can give… kasi nga rom-com royalty na siya eh, so ano pa ang ipapakita namin?”
Direk Cathy explained that she only wanted to see how far Gerald is willing to go to expand his range, and she admired him for taking all her hurtful words as criticism, and rising up to the challenge.
“May ginawa kaming [scene] na one take… tapos nung pinanood ko, nakita ko si John Lloyd (Cruz)... It was a sincere performance that I only get from John Lloyd… To me, ‘yun na ‘yun,” she said. “I admire him for allowing me na tapakan at rendahan [siya].”
Direk Cathy further shared that it was when Gerald’s acting improved that she saw how handsome he is.
“May isang sequence sabi ko, ‘Uy! Pogi ka na dun!’ Gulo-gulo pa ‘yung buhok niya… kaya sabi ko ‘Kapag bumalik ka pa sa acting mong ewan, lagot ka sa’kin,’” she said.
Meanwhile, Gerald said that he made it a point to not let his ego get in the way of learning from Direk Cathy.
“Day one pa lang, open na ako kung anuman ang mangyari, anuman ang sasabihin, tatanggapin ko, and use it sa tamang paraan and gawing motivation,” he said. “May mga times na masakit at nakakaiyak, pero mamahalin mo siya talaga.”
“My Perfect You” also stars Pia Wurtzbach. Produced by ABS-CBN Films, Star Cinema, it opens in cinemas March 14.
