National Coming Out Day: 5 queer characters who came out on the big screen

In recent years we've seen a rise in queer characters making their way to the big screen, and we only hope they become more common in mainstream media.

Today, October 11, as we celebrate National Coming Out Day, we put the spotlight on four films that not only gave us some pretty great representation, but also proved that there's a place (and clamor, if its impressive box office earnings are any indication) for #pride in local cinema.

1. Clinton from "Vince and Kath and James"

Milo Elmido Jr.'s Clinton is a supporting character in "VKJ" whose coming out journey is heartwarming from beginning to end. This film started out with him just starting a relationship with a girl and ended with him coming out to his best friend in a school hallway.

Light lang, fluffly lang, pero ang inspiring 'di ba?

2. Max and Christian "The Third Party"

"The Third Party" gave us Max and Christian, played by Zanjoe Marudo and Sam Milby, a gay couple who made the screen explode with their handsomeness.

Max, in particular, is interesting as he is a queer man in his late 30s who is only just coming out to his parents. This movie showed us his struggle with accepting his identity and even served us with an accurate representation of "The Heartbreaking Coming Out" dinner, complete with The Disappointed Filipino Father Who Doesn't Understand Why His Son is Gay.

But all worked out in the end, and Max and Christian got the happy ending they deserved!

3. Felix and Gary from "Ang Dalawang Mrs Reyes"

Played by Joross Gamboa and JC de Vera, Felix and Gary are the "mga bakla ng taon" whose coming out, unfortunately, came at a cost — they hurt their wives Lianne and Cindy, played by Angelica Panganiban and Judy Ann Santos, in the process.

But sometimes, it takes serious guts to pursue your happiness. Felix and Gary might be flawed, but in the end, they stayed true to themselves and their story is a lesson that's worth taking.

Happy National Coming Out Day, everyone!
