The One Music PH pool of artists has gained two new additions in indie artists Sarah Caballero and Michan.
The two young women signed their contracts today, January 5, with Star Music audio content head Jonathan Manalo and One Music PH’s editor-in-chief Joy Mesina.
Michan is an acoustic pop singer who admitted that she never expected to be signed as as professional artist because she used to do music as a hobby.
“When I got invited to One Music, siyempre excited ako. I’m really excited to perform naman generally. And looking back, actually kinakabahan ako and excited and hindi ko pa rin na-absorb na nangyayari na siya ngayon. So I’m just really thankful that the team from One Music liked my song and now I’m here,” she said.
On the other hand, Sarah is a pop jazz singer who’s very thankful for the opportunity the platform has given her.
“As an artist naman, wala naman kaming ibang hiniling kundi magkaroon ng opportunity katulad nito. So the fact na pinag-perform kami for One Music Live is a very great opportunity, lalo ngayon na signed na kami as an artist... Very happy,” she said.
The two shared the details of their newly signed one-year contracts, explaining that they’re supposed to present two songs to be included in a compilation with music from other One Music PH artists as well as tour in malls and radio stations.
But as indie artists jumping into the mainstream, the two acknowledged that joining One Music PH will be a great challenge.
“Being with One Music now, kasi mas malaki rin ‘yung reach niya, it’s really gonna be a challenge,” Michan started. “Even ako, tinatanong ko sa sarili ko how I will be able to communicate with these people kasi sanay ako na indie, na kilala ko ‘yung circle ko. Now that it’s gonna be big (circle), I think it’s gonna be a continuous learning. So... when we get to perform under One Music, siyempre we’ll understand also what the audiences want and from there, as an artist, we can also adjust in terms of music and how we talk to them.”
“As an artist, of course, given na ‘yung kailangang mag-grow ka sa talents mo, sa songwriting skills mo, but at the same time, kailangan mo maging relevant ka dun sa scene,” Sarah added. “Like sa indie kasi, it’s a different scene. So it’s important that we learn kung ano ‘yung current dun sa mainstream and then combine those two para maging artistic ka and at the same time, current ka dun sa mga listeners mo.”
Despite these challenges that lie ahead, they’re both confident in knowing that their fellow artists will guide them along the way.
Sarah and Michan are very excited to start working with One Music PH and happily shared what they expect of this new partnership.
“I’m expecting to reach a bigger audience because of the One Music platform,” Sarah admitted. “I’m also excited to work with the music industry’s best producers and songwriters.”
“Excited ako to record a song professionally,” Michan said, remarking that most indie music is produced at home. “And I guess ‘yung mag-perform sa mas marami pang lugar kasi ‘yun nga, before sanay lang kami kung saan kami sa circle namin sa indie. And now, may opportunity for us to tell our story sa iba pang places, so looking forward to that.”
And to inspire more artists to keep doing what they love, Michan and Sarah both encourage them to “never stop.”
“Never stop. Kasi maraming musicians talaga and maraming may mga, kumbaga, edge sa ‘yo, in terms of connections probably, pero just don’t stop dahil lang feeling mo hindi ka ever maririnig. Just do it for the love and everything else will follow,” Michan said.
“Ang importante, you compete with yourself,” Sarah said. “‘Wag kang tumingin sa ibang musician. Kailangan you grow yourself as an artist. Sarili mo lang isipin mo - ikaw, kung paano ka maggu-grow as an artist, as an individual. And never, ever stop.”
Keep an eye out for Sarah and Michan as they start their journey with One Music PH!
