Direk Tonet explains 'LYSB' is a far cry from 'The Fault in Our Stars'

Direk Antoinette Jadaone immediately shot down the speculations that "Love You to the Stars and Back" would be similar to "The Fault in our Stars" because of the cancer subplots.

During her digital conference last Friday, August 18, Direk Tonet explained that she already saw those comparisons coming.

"[Cancer] ang common denominator niya. Pero aside from that, Mika (Julia Barretto) and Caloy’s (Joshua Garcia) story is very different from the story of the characters in ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ or ‘A Walk to Remember.’ Nagkataon lang na may cancer pero every character has a different journey," she said.

"Kung mas uunahin namin ang iisipin ng ibang tao na ginaya sa ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ or iba pang cancer movies, hindi ko maitutuloy ang kuwentong gusto kong ikuwento... Sa buong pelikula, sure ako na hindi siya ‘The Fault in Our Stars.'"

She further explained that giving Caloy cancer is an integral part of the story- she didn't include it just to be poetic.

"Kung walang cancer si Caloy, sobrang ibang-ibang pelikula siya," she said.

Direk Tonet also shared that she's very happy with Joshua and Julia's involvement with creating the characters.

"Natutuwa ako kasi nagri-research sila about their characters," she shared. "This early ganun sila ka-sensitive, ka-sincere umarte so sobrang natutuwa ako."

"Love You to the Stars and Back" opens in cinemas August 30.
