At the "Kaye Pop" digital conference yesterday, August 9, Kaye Cal was asked by one correspondent about her voice.
Many people have made the mistake of thinking Kaye is a man when listening to her music because of her uniquely masculine voice. But while Kaye takes that as a compliment, it does raise a few questions, the main one being: is it natural?
Kaye was all for talking about her voice. “Sige, pag-usapan natin ‘yan,” she said. “Kasi may mga nababasa akong comments sa YouTube na talagang pinipilit nila na nag-hormones daw ako.”
She firmly answered that her masculine voice was not caused by taking hormones. “Hindi, no. As in, never ko siya na-try. And ‘yung mga panahong ‘yun, parang ‘di pa ata uso ‘yung testosterone. So no, hindi po.”
And she went on to clarify her sexuality. “I’m not trans. I’m a lesbian.”
When asked how her voice came to be the way it was, she shared that it just naturally became that way. “Ganito talaga ‘yung boses ko,” she said. “Actually, pati ‘yung sister ko. Dahil, sa family namin, parang nagkabaliktaran ‘yung mga boses namin,” she added with a laugh. “‘Yung kuya ko and ‘yung brother ko, sila ‘yung medyo matining ‘yung boses. Then ‘yung sa ‘min ng sister ko, medyo buo.”
Catch Kaye and her awesome voice at her concert, “Kaye Pop”, on August 18, 8 pm at the Music Museum.
