‘Youtopia’ star wins big at ASEAN Film Awards

Web series "Youtopia" star Mary Joy Apostol won Best Actress at the very first ASEAN Film Awards held in Da Nang, Vietnam for her role in the Mikhail Red film “Birdshot.”

Mary Joy’s portrayal of a young farm girl who unwittingly killed an endangered Philippine eagle with a shotgun in a reservation forest won her the top female acting honor in the competition.

Liza Dino, chairperson of the Film Development Council of the Philippines, shared the news through a post on her personal Facebook account last November 29.

The ASEAN film awards, dedicated to filmmakers in the ASEAN region, is an auxiliary show of the 20th Vietnam Film Festival.

“Birdshot” is also the Philippines’ official entry to the 2018 Academy Awards in the US under the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Mary Joy stars in the weekly web series and “La Luna Sangre” spinoff “Youtopia” where she plays Alex Alvarado, younger sister to Benj (Jal Galang) who eventually also goes missing.

Congratulations, Mary Joy!
