How to write a hit like 'Dahil Sa 'Yo'

Gabriel Tagadtad, songwriter and lead vocalist for the band Unit 406, shared at the Himig Handog 2017’s digital conference yesterday, November 28, his secret to writing hit songs. His entry to the competition “Tanghaling Tapat” (interpreted by his band) won 5th Best Song.

Gabriel shared the songwriting credit with Inigo Pascual for the hit pop song "Dahil Sa 'yo" that’s been a favorite for quite some time now and is very happy about the song’s success. He said that it took a lot of research and studying to make a hit, or even just a song. It took a lot of hard work.

“‘Yung songwriting kasi, isang skill ‘yan eh, walang secret diyan - pag-aaralan mo talaga,” he said. “Kailangan may instrument kang matututunan. Kailangan mong palawakin ‘yung vocabulary mo. ‘Yung concept mo, pag-iisipan mo talaga ‘yun."

Gabriel and his band were recently signed by One Music PH and are scheduled to release their EP by the end of the year.

Other winners of Himig Handog 2017 include Libertine Amistoso, the grand winner for Moira dela Torre’s “Titibo-Tibo;” Raizo Chabeldin and Biv de Vera won 2nd Best Song for Jona’s “Sampu” and Michael “Aikee” Aplacador won 3rd Best Song for Inigo feat. Aikee’s “Extensyon.”
