How Paul became who he wanted to be when he grew up

"It's not enough to be the son of somebody in this industry."

In a recent interview with UP Advertising Core's newsletter Juiceletter (https://issuu.com/thejuiceletter/docs/juiceletter_aug_2016), Direk Paul Soriano sat down with the organization's Shekilah Bartolome and spoke about the craft of filmmaking and his rise as a critically acclaimed director.

Paul had a privilege going into the industry. His father is Jeric Soriano, a famous commercial advertisement director, and his grandfather is lauded actor Nestor de Villa. Notwithstanding this advantage, Paul confessed that it took a lot of hard work to break into the scene.

The soon-to-be father with wife Toni Gonzaga shared that it took two years of internships and working as a personal assistant before he landed his first official gig as a director.

"Even if you do know someone in the industry, if you are the son of someone in the industry, they can get you the meeting, they can get you the first job, maybe, but if you want the second, third, fourth job, you need to be really good."

Nowadays, Paul boasts a successful career in film both as a director and a producer. The 2014 film "Transit," in which he served as an executive producer, was the Philippines' official entry into the 2014 Academy Awards.

His production company Ten17P is responsible for the internationally celebrated movies such as Lav Diaz's "Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis," which won the Silver Bear at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival.
