Morissette shoots down alleged rivalry among Birit Queens

By Regina Tabora

Birit Queen Morissette Amon sat down with the King of Talk on last night’s episode of “Tonight with Boy Abunda," August 11.

Boy immediately went down to business, telling Morissette the observation that a lot of people do not like the idea of “birit,” saying it’s just a way to get people’s attention. He then asked Morissette to explain the difference between “birit” and “tili.”

“Kapag birit kasi Tito Boy, birit is the Tagalog [word] for ‘belting.’ Belt is [a] technique. Naka-support ‘yung boses mo. ‘Pag tili kasi, it could just come from here (throat), and wala siyang napupuntahan,” she explained. Morissette also sang a few lines of her song “Akin Ka Na Lang” to make the difference between the two clearer.

Boy also brought up the issue that the four Birit Queens, Angeline Quinto, Klarisse de Guzman, Jonalyn Viray, and Morisette herself try to upstage each other during their “ASAP” prod numbers.

Morissette immediately denied this, saying, “First of all, 'yung mga songs namin, ‘ASAP’ po 'yung nagbibigay. So we just take the songs, inaaral namin 'yung sari-sarili naming mga kanta. Pinapantayan namin 'yung energy na binibigay ng katabi naming kumanta,” she explained.

“Kapag spot ko, I will give my all. Pero 'yung time kasi na magme-merge na kami kasi that’s part of the program na… dapat magbe-blend kami,” she added.

“Ang maganda kasi saming apat, iba-iba 'yung style namin,” she said when asked on who for her is the best singer among the four of them. She even did impressions of the other three Birit Queens to demonstrate their differences.

During “Fast Talk,” she was asked if she still gets hurt when people call her a Sarah Geronimo wannabe. She replied that she doesn’t anymore.

“There was a time after ‘The Voice’ na parang [limited ako sa image na 'yun]... but now I’m more honored about it and I’m happy people have started to accept me.”

Morissette will have a concert on Saturday, August 13, at the Music Museum.
