John Lloyd Cruz had a memorable time in New York where he received his Star Asia award last Saturday, July 9 (US time), from the New York Asian Film Festival for his performance in Erik Matti's "Honor Thy Father."
NBC News featured the box office and multi-awarded actor, highlighting his decades-long career and his foray into independent cinema.
John Lloyd told NBC News that he's on the lookout for more mature roles but stressed that he wouldn't quit doing those characters that people have come to love seeing him portray (think "One More Chance," "A Second Chance," and "A Very Special Love").
"I have become more personal with my choices. But that doesn't mean I'm going to stop working for my network, my 'mother studio' [ABS-CBN]. That's just me," he related.
He added, "As an actor, you continue to evolve. You don't want to limit yourself."
"Honor Thy Father" also made its New York debut via the said festival. NYAFF senior programmer Stephen Cremin praised Lloydy's performance as a father who went great lengths just to save his family.
"Cruz was actually our first choice for this year's Star Asia Awards. 'Honor Thy Father' captures Cruz at a very interesting moment in his career, when he is changing audience pre-conceptions of him," Stephen told NBC News.
Lloydy is the first Filipino and Southeast Asian actor to receive such accolade.
