The Philippine film industry mourns the death of one of its most influential storytellers, Direk Wenn Deramas, who passed away today, February 29, due to cardiac arrest.
He was only 49.
Direk Wenn's manager and close friend June Rufino said in an interview earlier that he rushed to Capitol Medical Center in Quezon City to check on his sibling who was brought there, but Direk Wenn himself suffered a heart attack after he was informed that his sister had just died.
It can be remembered that Direk Wenn almost had a heart attack two years ago and had an angioplasty the previous year.
His remains will be brought to Arlington in Araneta, Quezon City.
He directed numerous blockbuster films, such as "The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin," the "Ang Tanging Ina" film series, "Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy," "Sisterakas," "The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin," and most recently, the 2015 Metro Manila Film Festival entry "Beauty and the Bestie," which is now the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time.
In a statement, meanwhile, the Star Cinema management paid tribute to the great Direk Wenn:
"We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our Kapamilya Direk Wenn Deramas. Today we lost not just one of the greatest minds, but a loving son, brother, friend. This is a sad day for the industry. He will forever be remembered."
