“Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis (A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery)" premiered at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival last February 18 with much acclaim.
The eight-and-a-half-hour-long film, directed by Lav Diaz and produced under Direk Paul Soriano's TEN17P, was a certified sold-out, ABS-CBN News reported.
Present during the premiere were Direk Lav, Direk Paul, lead actors John Lloyd Cruz and Piolo Pascual, and co-stars such as Angel Aquino, Cherie Gil, Alessandra de Rossi, Susan Africa, Bernardo Bernardo, Joel Saracho, and Hazel Orencio.
The movie is described as follows: "It is a sorrowful mystery that marries Literature (the missing chapters of El Filibusterismo), Mythology (tikbalangs), and History (Oryang's 30-day search for the lost body of Andres Bonifacio)."
Producer Bianca Balbuena thanked the Berlinale for giving them the freedom and allowing the film to compete without cutting its length.
"Hele" marked the third Filipino film to compete at the prestigious festival. The first one was Ishmael Bernal’s “Himala” in 1982 and the second was Brillante Mendoza’s “Captive” in 2012.
Meanwhile, John Lloyd and Piolo will showcase their fine acting anew in separate projects under Star Cinema.
Piolo will play a DJ in a movie with Coleen Garcia and Dawn Zulueta directed by Gino M. Santos while John Lloyd will continue shooting for a movie with Jennylyn Mercado under the direction of Cathy Garcia-Molina.
