Banana cue vendor is 'Voice Kids' grand champion

MANILA -- Eleven-year-old Elha Nympha, who sells banana cue for a living, has been named grand champion of the second season of "The Voice Kids" on Sunday at Resorts World Manila.

Nympha, who got into the finals after garnering 18.23% of votes in the semi-finals, edged out the competition with her soaring rendition of Martin Nievera's "Ikaw ang Lahat Sa Akin."

"Sa totoo lang wala akong masabi. Elha, pinatunayan mo sa aming lahat na hindi ka lang puro birit. Isa ka ring mang-aawit na punong-puno ng puso kapag umaawit. You're a good storyteller," Sarah Geronimo told Nympha.

Her coach, Bamboo Mañalac, appealed to the public to trust Nympha's talent.

"Pilipinas, please, magtiwala kayo sa anong narinig niyo, anong nakita niyo, at naramdaman mo. She is a very special singer. Undeniable," he added.

On Saturday, she brought the house down with her performance of Mariah Carey's "Emotions," drawing loud cheers after she effortlessly hit the song's whistle tone.

Nympha got 42.16% of votes, followed by Reynan Dal-Anay, Esang de Torres and Sassa Dagdag.

This is the first time that a representative from Bamboo's Kamp Kawayan has won in the history of the competition.

Journey to the grand finals

Nympha, who was the last member to join Kamp Kawayan, wowed her coach with her cover of Mariah Carey's "Vision of Love."
"Yun ang hinahanap ko, 'yung match. Will this song be too much for you? May some points, nangyari nga na it was a little too much for you. Pero 'yung power, definitely nandoon. It shows me, I have a very strong singer here in front of me," Mañalac said.
In the battle rounds, Nympha was part of the trio that received a standing ovation from the coaches for their version of Alamid's "Your Love."
Mañalac went for Nympha because of her "incredible" control.
"Elha, for your age nga, your control, you sing beyond your age. At 'yung mga pinaguusapan natin, una, stick to melody, ginawa mo 'yun. Thank you for listening to me," he said.
Nympha continued on to the Sing Offs, wowing the coaches anew with her emotional performance of Gary Valenciano's "Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos?" -- a song she dedicated to her late father.
Her performance earned praise from her coach, as well as from Broadway diva Lea Salonga.

"Naging maganda kasi sa iyo, konektado ka sa lahat ng mga kinakanta mo," Salonga told Nympha. "Madali ang pagbibirit, madali ang pagkulot, pero ang maglagay ng puso sa likod ng boses, mahirap iyon. Hindi iyon natuturo."
In the semi-finals, Nympha belted out "You'll Never Walk Alone" from the hit musical "Carousel" in front of a packed audience.
Salonga was at a loss for words and simply described it as a "perfect performance."
Bamboo similarly heaped praises on her.
"May mga moment na nagbabago 'yung direksyon ng buhay mo. I think when we look back sa lahat ng mga mangyayari, ito 'yung moment na iyon. This was that moment that would change your life," he said.
